Summary

The Tornquist Zone separates old Precambrian cratonic units from younger Phanerozoic accreted terranes in Europe, splitting into the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone (STZ) and the Thor Suture (TS) in the north. Geophysical studies across the STZ reveal contrasts in crustal and upper-mantle structure, including crustal and lithospheric thinning, increased heat flow, and differences in gravity and magnetic field anomalies. A marked Upper-Mantle Velocity Boundary (UMVB) extends from the STZ in Denmark to southern Norway, defining a deep zone with high upper-mantle seismic velocity in shield areas and lower velocity in basins and southern Norway.
