Summary

Morphometric characteristics of flightlessness in the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) and fossil mancalline auks were studied using data from skin specimens, skeletal material, and published data on body mass and wing area. A regression equation estimated the body mass of P. impennis to be around 5 kg. The Great Auk had relatively small wings, resulting in wing-loadings comparable to those of medium-sized penguins. Multivariate analysis of external measurements showed that Pinguinus had a uniquely large size, short wings, and a moderately deep bill compared to other Recent alcids. Skeletal measurements revealed that flightless Alcidae had relatively short distal wing elements and dorsoventral flattening of major wing elements, with relatively large core and pelvic dimensions. Estimated body mass for fossil mancallines exceeded that of the largest flighted alcids but was less than that of Pinguinus. The flightlessness of the Great Auk was likely a consequence of extreme specialization for pursuit diving, convergent with that of penguins.
