Borrowed specimens must be annotated prior to return, with good reason given if not annotated. Return shipment is coordinated with the Collection Manager, who provides procedures for loan packaging and prepares shipping invoices. Specimens must be handled with care, sorted by institution and loan number, and counted to verify accession seals. Type specimens are packed separately and clearly marked. Specimens are repaired, loose parts secured, and remounted if necessary. Original packing material is retrieved, and marks made by FLAS researchers are erased. Specimens are covered, bundled, and cushioned with padding. Bundles are secured, labeled, and placed in sturdy shipping boxes, which are sealed and labeled with shipping information, including return address and mailing method. The investigator is responsible for providing labor or funds for sorting, packaging, and returning loans, as well as return postage. Foreign shipments require customs forms and may be sent via registered mail. Non-compliance may result in holds on graduation or student records and monetary compensation.
