LANEF is a "Labex" (Laboratoire d'Excellence) funded in 2011, associating five fundamental research labs in the domains of nanoscience, energies for the future, and nanosensors for healthcare. The five labs are: Institut Néel, Institut Nanosciences & Cryogénie, Grenoble Electrical Engineering Lab, Grenoble High Magnetic Field Lab, and Laboratoire de Physique et Modélisation des Milieux Condensés. LANEF enhances synergy between teams, makes connections with R&D, and offers funding for students and scientists. The Labex has identified three major economical and societal challenges: information and communication technologies, energy, and healthcare, and nine major research fields where the labs provide a critical mass and forefront expertise. LANEF's tools include scientific events, specific actions to enhance international collaborations, education, and exploitation of results. The Labex has funded equipment projects, recruited "chairs of excellence", and recruited PhD students for projects. Scientific achievements and spin-off companies are described, and the Labex has organized seminars, scientific workshops, and international collaborations, including a 2-day workshop with the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
