Summary

Neutron irradiation causes aggregate expansion in concrete biological shields of pressurized water reactors, leading to severe cracking. A meso-scale nonlinear concrete model was used to investigate the structural significance of radiation-induced volumetric expansion, considering irradiation transport, moisture transport, and heat transfer. The model showed that cracking onset is triggered by initial shrinkage-induced cracking and propagates to a depth of over 10 cm after 80 years of operation, but relaxation of cement paste stresses delays crack propagation by about 10 years.
