Summary

Naphthalene adsorbs on Ni(111) in multiple layers at 110 K, with the first layer being a flat-lying chemisorbed monolayer and subsequent layers being physisorbed. Heating to 200 K desorbs the multilayers, and at 360 K, the chemisorbed monolayer starts dehydrogenating, with the molecule tilting and recovering some aromaticity, peaking at 400 K and coinciding with hydrogen desorption. Further heating leads to dehydrogenation, H2 gas production, and formation of carbidic and graphitic surface carbon.
