Summary

The US Navy uses various models for predicting conditions in coastal and nearshore regions, including the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model for wave predictions and Delft3D for coastal circulation. SWAN predicts wave energy as a function of frequency and direction, forced by winds and waves at offshore boundaries. Delft3D, composed of modules such as Delft3D-FLOW and Delft3D-WAVE, predicts currents, water levels, temperature, and salinity, using inputs like winds, tides, and general ocean circulation. A four-dimensional variational assimilation (4DVar) system, SWANFAR, is under development to improve nearshore wave predictions using regional wave observations. These models are crucial for naval operations, including military and humanitarian applications, and are run at the Naval Oceanographic Office.
