Summary

CERN developed a new radiation monitoring system, CROME, to replace an existing system, with a required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of 2. The system's hardware safety integrity was verified according to IEC 61508, involving calculations of Probability of dangerous Failure per Hour (PFH) and Safe Failure Fraction (SFF), as well as considering Hardware Fault Tolerance (HFT). The verification used failure rate prediction with the FIDES standard, Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), showing that the CROME system complies with SIL 2 requirements.
