Summary

Researchers developed a mobile, trailer-based search platform for detecting radiological and nuclear threats, incorporating fast neutron counting and coded-aperture gamma-ray imaging. The system, called the Dual Hybrid Detection-Localization-Identification (DLI) system, uses a combination of radiation sensing materials and can detect and localize sources containing plutonium (Pu) while moving. Experiments were conducted using a proof-of-concept system built inside a trailer, which successfully detected a 252Cf source while driving along a roadway. The system's performance and potential for scaled-up designs are discussed, highlighting its potential for threat sensing applications.
