Summary

The shell's structure was investigated using light microscopy, hardness measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and X-Ray diffraction study. The material had a three-phase structure, with phase 1 consisting of uranium in the α-phase, phase 2 containing U6Fe, and phase 3 containing intermetallic inclusions U7Ge or U5Ge3. After explosive loading, the shell exhibited a symmetrical, approximately concentric structure with large cracks located within two rings at radii R ≈ 13…16 mm and R ≈ 16…19 mm. The material's structure was similar to that of a non-loaded sample except for the area with fractures, where the microstructure was represented by a melted and abruptly crystallized metal with small inclusions in its matrix.
