Summary

Distributed generation with heat recovery and storage can meet consumer energy requirements more efficiently than the existing centralized grid. On-site thermal power generation can be less efficient than central station generation, but using combined heat and power (CHP) applications and recovering heat from small-scale on-site generation can make distributed energy resources (DER) attractive to consumers. The DER Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM) is a mixed-integer linear program that minimizes overall energy cost for a test year by selecting units to install and determining their hourly operating schedules. Enhancing DER-CAM with the option to store recovered low-grade heat can lower costs further by reducing off-peak generation and relying on storage. Analysis of five typical commercial buildings in San Francisco, California, demonstrates the effects of storage, and an estimate of the cost per unit capacity of heat storage is calculated.
