Summary

An 8-day composited 36 km SMAP soil moisture dataset from 1979 to 2015 was produced using a random forest and historical CCI data. The SMAP mission, launched in 2015, has shown satisfactory performance in spatial accuracy and capturing temporal changes, but its data is limited to 2015 onwards. A random forest model was proposed to extend the SMAP dataset historically, using the corresponding CCI time-series, and the predicted RF_SMAP dataset was validated using in-situ SM data and real SMAP data, showing it to be a reliable substitute for the historical CCI dataset.
