Summary

Quartz wristwatches keep time more accurately than mechanical counterparts, with some manufacturers specifying accuracy as ±15 seconds per month. Four low-cost quartz watches were tested using measurement and data analysis techniques to characterize their performance. The watches used 32.768 kHz quartz crystals and were found to have varying accuracy and stability. The Allan deviation was used to estimate frequency stability, and a commercial watch analyzer was used to measure the frequency of the quartz oscillator and stepping motor pulses. The results showed that the watches had different levels of accuracy and stability, with some being more accurate than others.
