Summary

The Herschel ATLAS is a large open-time key project on the Herschel Space Observatory, surveying 510 square degrees of the extragalactic sky in five far-infrared and submillimetre bands. The survey aims to explore the uncharted territory of the 60-500 µm wavelength range, where approximately half of the energy emitted by objects in the Universe has been absorbed by dust and reradiated. Previous surveys, such as IRAS, ISO, and Spitzer, have been limited in their ability to detect dust in galaxies, especially early-type galaxies and cool dust. The Herschel ATLAS will combine with complementary multi-wavelength datasets to undertake six major science programs, including predicting the properties of ATLAS sources in other wavebands using new models based on previous submillimetre surveys of galaxies.
