Summary

A comparison of the rheological properties of dispersions of an alkyd resin in water prepared by direct emulsification and phase inversion was conducted. The study found that phase inversion produced a smaller droplet size distribution than direct emulsification, and surprisingly, the dispersions with a smaller droplet size had a lower zero shear rate viscosity. The rheology of the direct emulsification samples changed with age, while the phase inversion samples remained stable. The differences between the two methods were attributed to the presence or absence of excess surfactant in the aqueous phase.
