Summary

A novel SARS-COV-2 variant, designated VOC-202012/01, was identified in Kent, England, through genomic analysis of cases from November 2020. The variant has 23 mutations, including 13 non-synonymous mutations, 4 deletions, and 6 synonymous mutations. It has spread geographically, with the largest number of cases in London, South East, and East of England regions. Epidemiological findings suggest the variant has a higher transmission rate, with an estimated increase in reproduction number of 0.57-0.74. The variant is associated with a significant trend of increasing reported cases, with a 10% difference in VOC frequency corresponding to approximately 50 more weekly cases per 100,000 in early December.
