Summary

Two new methods for identifying agrobacteria were developed, one with broad specificity and the other with narrow specificity. The broad specificity method used ribosomal antigens common to Agrobacterium and Rhizobium genera, while the narrow specificity method used antisera to unwashed ribosomes from Agrobacterium strains, which reacted with lipopolysaccharide antigens to produce strain-specific serological reactions. The methods were validated by identifying putative agrobacteria from a natural habitat and recovering Agrobacterium radiobacter K84 strains introduced into the environment.
