A large beam tested at Toronto University was simulated using a nonlinear finite element code, with the entry chosen as the overall winner of the prediction contest. The crack propagation was modeled using a smeared crack approach and a fracture mechanics-based cohesive crack model, with a parameter study performed to examine the model uncertainty of numerical simulation. The finite element model used a plane stress simplification with low order quadrilateral isoparametric elements, and the smeared crack analyses were made with the program ATENA using the combined fracture-plastic model for concrete. The constitutive model formulation assumes small strains and is based on the strain decomposition into elastic, plastic, and fracture components. The model includes features such as reduction of compressive strength and shear stiffness degradation due to cracking, and the damage of concrete by cracks is reflected in the reduction factor of the compressive strength.
