Summary

Modern color science originated in the 17th century with Isaac Newton, who discovered that white light is a mixture of differently refrangible rays. Newton's Experimentum Crucis involved passing sunlight through a prism, refracting it, and then passing the refracted beam through a second prism, demonstrating that each degree of refrangibility corresponds to a specific hue. He found that white light is not homogeneous, but a mixture of rays of different refrangibility, and that the color of an object is its disposition to reflect lights of certain refrangibilities. Newton's work laid the foundation for modern color science, but he struggled with the concept of color mixing, recognizing that a mixture of two rays can match the color produced by homogeneous light.
