Summary

Starch degradation in Arabidopsis leaves at night differs from the traditional understanding of this process. Glucans derived from starch granules are hydrolyzed to maltose via β-amylase, then exported from the chloroplast and converted to glucose and a glucosylated acceptor molecule in the cytosol. The enzyme attacking the starch granule and the cytosolic acceptor molecule remain unknown. This pathway may operate in leaves of other species and non-photosynthetic organs, but differs from the process in starch-storing organs like cereal endosperms and legume seeds, which may resemble the traditional pathway.
