Summary

Researchers demonstrated nonlinear light generation in topological nanostructures, specifically zigzag arrays of nanodisks. Experiments showed that third-harmonic generation (THG) is enhanced at the edges of the arrays, with the contrast of the edges increasing with the length of the array for odd numbers of particles. The position of the THG hot spot changed when the pump polarization was rotated, reflecting the localization of magnetic dipole edge states at opposite sides of the array. The introduction of disorder in the zigzag arrays affected the THG distribution, with hot-spot formation identical to undisturbed zig-zags observed for certain parameters. Numerical calculations using the finite-element-method solver in COMSOL Multiphysics qualitatively agreed with the experiment and simplified dipole model.
