Summary

Aquatic biodiversity in the US is declining at an unprecedented rate, with freshwater species disappearing 2-5 times faster than native land animals. Nearly 40% of freshwater fishes, 70% of mussels, 48% of crayfishes, and 74% of aquatic snails are imperiled. Habitat loss and fragmentation, mainly due to human activities like development, drainage, and pollution, are the leading threats. Introduced species, such as zebra mussels, also pose a significant risk. To sustain biodiversity, it's essential to protect and restore habitats, restrict urban sprawl, and prevent the introduction of non-native species.
