Summary

Researchers used the hierarchical clustering method to identify asteroid families and found a new family, the Datura cluster, consisting of six 1-2.5 km diameter asteroids with tightly clustered orbits near the inner main belt. The cluster's small dispersion of orbits and size frequency distribution suggest it is the remnant of a larger parent asteroid disrupted by a collision. Numerical tracking of the orbits backward in time indicates the Datura cluster is approximately 450,000 years old, making it one of the youngest known asteroid families. The cluster's composition is thought to be related to ordinary chondrite meteorites, and it may be a source of material in the circumsolar dust cloud.
