Summary

Researchers developed stable isotope clocks to track resource shifts in anadromous rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) by quantifying tissue turnover rates and discrimination factors for seven tissues. A diet-switch experiment and model fitting were used to estimate N stable isotope (d15N) turnover rates, which ranged from 9.0 to 27.7 days among tissues. The study evaluated six tissue turnover models and found that longer turnover tissues provided accurate estimates of time since resource switch, while faster turnover tissues provided higher precision estimates within their half-life post-switch. Averaging estimates from multiple tissues provided the highest precision estimates of time since resource shift for up to 64 days. The study provides insight into physiological processes underlying stable isotope patterns and quantifies key parameters for field-based stable isotope analysis.
