Summary

Electromagnetic signals broadcast by GNSS satellites suffer delays while travelling through the atmosphere, with the troposphere having a significant effect on propagation. The delay can be separated into two parts: the effect of gases in hydrostatic equilibrium and the effect of water vapour and condensed water. The RTCA specifies a minimum operational performance standard for GNSS systems, recommending a maximum tropospheric error of 0.12 m in terms of standard deviation in the zenith direction. However, this standard neglects geographical and seasonal variation of this error. A new integrity model for the troposphere is derived, taking into consideration seasonal and geographical behaviour using extreme value theory. The results show that the original RTCA recommendation is too conservative, with a standard deviation of only 5 cm and a seasonal amplitude of 2-3 cm at mid-latitudes. The application of the derived integrity model helps improve the availability of GNSS positioning service in aviation.
