Psychologists often point out that both a baby and a dog are exposed to language, but only the baby learns to talk, however, a study by Kaminski et al. reports that a border collie named Rico has impressive abilities to learn words, with a vocabulary of over 200 words, and can learn new words in a single trial, similar to young children's "fast mapping" abilities. Rico's abilities are comparable to those of children and adults, and surpass those of nonhuman primates, suggesting that dogs may have been specifically selected for attending to human communicative intentions. However, while Rico's learning is impressive, it is limited to specific routines and contexts, and it is unclear whether he truly understands the referential nature of words, unlike human children who appreciate that words refer to categories and individuals in the world. Further experiments are needed to resolve this issue and determine the extent of Rico's word-learning abilities.
