Lab-scale tests showed the feasibility of a biological process for nitrogen removal from ink-jet printing wastewater using autotrophic bacterial populations. Ammonium oxidising bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidisers (AAO) activities were measured, with AAO activity ranging from 0.1-0.4 gN2-N/gVSS/d. Tests on raw mixed wastewater and concentrated wastewater from the first rinsing bath were performed, with strong inhibition of anammox activity observed in the concentrated wastewater. Careful operation of a continuous-flow bioreactor can overcome this limitation. The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of applying autotrophic N removal processes to wastewater from digital printing factories.
