The LIFE WolfAlps EU project aims to improve wolf-human coexistence in the Alpine region. Action C2 focuses on measures against illegal wolf killing and control of poison baits. Wildlife crime, including the illegal killing of endangered species like wolves, is a significant problem in Europe, particularly in the Alpine region.

Key Issues:

1. Poaching and Poisoning: Poaching is a major cause of wolf mortality, and the use of poison is a particularly damaging method, posing a threat to the entire ecosystem and human safety.
2. Lack of Coordination: The lack of a systematic approach to investigating and prosecuting wildlife crimes hinders conservation efforts.
3. Need for Standardized Procedures: A harmonized standard operating procedure (SOP) for forensic investigations of suspected wildlife crime cases is necessary to address these issues.

Handbook on Forensic Methods:

A Handbook on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in Forensic Investigations of Suspected Illegal Killing of Wildlife was compiled in 2019. The handbook provides a comprehensive approach to investigating wildlife crimes, from detection to prosecution. A German translation of the handbook has been published, enabling wider distribution and use among authorities and organizations in the Alpine region.

Project Actions:

1. Establishment of Anti-Poison Dog Units: New anti-poison dog units will be established to complement existing ones, covering the entire Alpine region.
2. Enhanced Cooperation: Cooperation between police forces and environmental authorities across countries will be enhanced to ensure mutual assistance and develop a comprehensive approach to addressing wildlife crime.
3. Minimizing Illegal Killing: Efforts will be made to minimize illegal killing and prevent the use of poison, reducing collateral damage to other wildlife and domestic animals.
