Summary

Yellow nutsedge is a perennial weed that causes significant yield losses in dry bulb onion production, with losses of up to 87% and 89% reported for agronomic and horticultural crops. The weed thrives in high light intensity conditions and is stimulated by frequent irrigation and high nitrogen fertilization, which are common practices in onion production. A study was conducted in five commercial onion fields to determine the effect of yellow nutsedge competition on onion yield. The results showed that yellow nutsedge competition decreased marketable onion bulbs by 34% and marketable onion yields by 23-64%. The competition increased small onion yields but decreased jumbo and colossal onion yields. The study highlights the need for effective management practices to control yellow nutsedge in onion production.
