Summary

An alternative method using artificial neural networks (ANNs) is proposed to determine load current harmonic components in a single-phase electric power system. The method estimates the An and Bn Fourier series coefficients of the current waveform, allowing for the identification of amplitude and phase angle components of a distorted signal. The ANN is trained offline and used to identify harmonic components online during a half-cycle of the voltage supply waveform. The method is compared to the truncated Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and validated through simulation and experimental results. The loads used in the study are a commercial AC controller (dimmer) and a diode bridge rectifier, which are common nonlinear loads in industrial, commercial, and residential applications.
