Summary

Bitmap Distribution Format (BDF) Version 2.1 is an X Consortium standard for font interchange. A BDF file contains character bitmap information in a human-readable, USASCII-encoded form. The file consists of a sequence of variable-length lines, starting with information about the face as a whole, followed by individual character information and bitmaps. The general form of a font bitmap description file includes: STARTFONT, COMMENT, FONT, SIZE, FONTBOUNDINGBOX, STARTPROPERTIES, properties, ENDPROPERTIES, CHARS, character segments, and ENDFONT. Character segments include STARTCHAR, ENCODING, SWIDTH, DWIDTH, BBX, ATTRIBUTES, BITMAP, and ENDCHAR. The format provides metric information, such as scalable width, device width, and bounding box dimensions, to define the logical font-ascent, font-descent, and default character for the font.
