In 1984, Austin found himself out of work after Gavilan Computers closed its doors, and the computer industry was undergoing significant changes with the introduction of the IBM PC AT, Apple III, and Lotus 1-2-3. The Xerox Alto had demonstrated a new way of interacting with computers using a mouse, and companies like Apple, Three Rivers Computer, and Sun Microsystems were working on similar ideas. Austin's company, Forethought, Inc., was formed by two former Apple employees who planned to bring a graphics user interface environment to PCs.
