Summary

Researchers propose a new approach to evaluate the trustworthiness of web sources, called Knowledge-Based Trust (KBT), which relies on endogenous signals, namely the correctness of factual information provided by the source. They extract facts from web sources using information extraction methods and propose a probabilistic model to distinguish between errors made in the extraction process and factual errors in the web source. The model estimates the trustworthiness of a web source as the probability that it contains the correct value for a fact. The approach is applied to a database of 2.8 billion facts extracted from the web, estimating the trustworthiness of 119 million webpages. Manual evaluation confirms the effectiveness of the method.
