Summary

Global heuristics for distributed cooperative multi-agent planning are crucial for efficiency, but their application is challenging due to the difficulty of applying classical heuristics in distributed environments. Most existing multi-agent planning approaches use local search heuristics, but recent attempts have been made to use global heuristics. The success of global heuristics in multi-agent planning depends on proper selection and combination of heuristics for distributed environments. This work analyzes the benefits of global heuristics in multi-agent planning and studies how combining these functions can improve the efficiency of cooperative multi-agent planning systems. Two distributed heuristic functions, hDTG and hLand, are formalized and combined into a novel multi-heuristic approach, MH-FMAP, which improves the performance of the FMAP framework. Experimental results evaluate the two heuristics and the multi-heuristic approach on various domains adapted from the International Planning Competition to a multi-agent context.
