Summary

Many AI researchers publish code and data accompanying their papers in GitHub repositories, referred to as academic AI repositories. A study of 1,149 academic AI repositories found that highly cited papers are more likely to have popular repositories, and vice versa. The study identified 21 features characterizing software engineering practices, grouped into code, reproducibility, and documentation dimensions. Popular repositories were found to be statistically significantly different from unpopular ones in 11 features, including more code files, lines, and modules, better reproducibility measures, and more detailed documentation. The most important features differentiating popular and unpopular repositories were the number of links to other GitHub repositories, images in the README file, and inclusion of a license.
