Researchers implemented a prototype of Perceus for OCaml 4.14.0, allowing for a direct comparison with the standard generational garbage collector. The initial performance results are promising, with Perceus showing improved memory usage and execution time in some benchmarks. The implementation includes drop specialization, an optimization that reduces unnecessary reference count operations. Further optimizations, such as reuse analysis and reuse specialization, are planned for future implementation. The prototype uses the mimalloc allocator to work around OCaml's calling convention, which is not well-suited for reference counting. Benchmarks show that Perceus with drop specialization can outperform the standard GC in some cases, with relative execution times ranging from 0.72 to 2.76 and relative peak working sets ranging from 0.54 to 0.99.
