A qualitative study of 37 social engineers revealed 12 characteristics of effective social engineering deceptions, including consideration of social context, human nature, social networks, social conventions, and human processing limitations. These characteristics are organized into four categories: planning, proximity, activation, and concealment, forming a "crime script" of actions taken by perpetrators. The study suggests that social engineering deceptions are intertwined with situational, cultural, and structural circumstances, and proposes using social theories, such as those of Erving Goffman, Pierre Bourdieu, and Anthony Giddens, to guide future research on social engineering and deception.
