The club uses EtrexH GPS units for field survey work, which are battery-operated, water-resistant, and can lock onto satellites for accurate location tracking. To use the units, insert batteries, switch on, and wait for satellite lock. The unit will automatically track and log its position, generating a 'tracklog' that can be used to log linear features. Individual spot locations, called 'waypoints,' can be logged manually. To export data, use EasyGPS software, connecting the unit to a computer via a USB to serial converter lead, and selecting the correct port and settings. The software can then transfer waypoints and tracks from the unit, which can be saved as a GPS exchange file and sent to the mapper for import into Ocad.
