Summary

Advance Warning Signs:
- Use EPG 616.17M (TA-17M) for placement/removal of signs.
- Maintain a one-mile gap between flagger and the FLAGGER symbol sign.
- Adjust channelizers as needed, reducing or eliminating them if required.
- Alternate active sign sets (1 & 3 vs 2 & 4) to control traffic flow until work is complete.
- Ensure inactive signs are turned away from both directions of traffic.

Protective Measures:
- Utilize a protective vehicle with high-intensity lights, positioned at least 150 feet before the work zone if possible.
- Operate flashing arrow panels in four-corner or alternating diamond caution mode.
- Consider using a pilot vehicle for complex or lengthy work zones.

Flagger Station:
- Flaggers must maintain a 100-foot distance from equipment and workers.
- Implement the 3-2-1 cone procedure for safe traffic control.
- Designate an escape route for all flaggers.
- Illuminate flagger stations at night, except during emergencies.

Training Requirements:
- Flaggers and pilot vehicle operators must have current certification (external or internal training as per EPG 616.4.3 and 616.5.1).

Additional Notes:
- One or both lanes may be stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time.
- Refer to specific guidelines for mobile operations, short-duration closures (EPG 616.8.17M, 616.8.10SD, 616.8.10SDTMA), and side roads entering work zones.
