Summary

Atmospheric aerosols over the Indian region exhibit strong zonal gradients in concentration and vertical extent, with aerosol extinction coefficients reaching up to 6 km during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons over the mainland. In contrast, aerosols over surrounding oceans are confined within 3 km. The vertical extent of aerosols decreases gradually towards either side of the study region, with the highest extent around 75°E. Dust aerosols are ubiquitous in western India, while high-altitude dust layers remain aloft throughout the year with seasonal variations. Radiative transfer calculations show enhanced atmospheric heating at lower altitudes during the pre-monsoon, particularly in the 2-3 km altitude range. These findings have implications for aerosol-radiation interactions in regional climate simulations.
