Summary

A web-based survey conducted in March 2021 by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Vaccine Science Fellows found that vaccine confidence either increased or remained unchanged for the majority of respondents since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a significant number of respondents expressed a decrease in confidence in vaccines. The survey highlighted the importance of having a usual source of medical care, with a strong positive correlation between having a usual source of care and vaccine confidence. Results also showed a shift in where people obtained their vaccine information, with a decrease in information coming from primary care clinicians and an increase in information coming from the news, internet, and social media. Demographic analysis suggested that the characteristics of those expressing hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccines differ from those expressing hesitancy toward traditional immunizations.
