China's manufacturing model has been built on the exploitation of migrant workers under a despotic labour regime, but the situation has undergone dramatic transformations, including changes in workers' demographic profiles, everyday life practices, and new social, technical, and gendered divisions of labour inside factories. Despite persisting draconian controls, a new labour regime of "conciliatory despotism" has emerged, combining coercive power with new workplace tactics and production strategies. The transformation is driven by labour shortages, rising real wages, and the relaxation of the discriminatory household registration system, leading to new mechanisms of "soft control" to conciliate workers' grievances.
