Summary

Hostility is associated with various health problems, and a psychosocial vulnerability model suggests that hostile individuals are at greater risk due to less effective coping strategies. A 5-year study of 866 local government employees in Finland found that exposure to stressors during economic decline increased sickness absence rates. Hostility increased the risk of sickness absence in women, particularly those facing organizational downsizing, high job demands, or negative work changes, but the effect was less evident in men. The findings support the psychosocial vulnerability model, but suggest that the relationship between hostility and health problems may differ between sexes.
