Summary

Weaning of beef calves induces a stress response, altering behavior, hormonal mediators, and immune function. This study used RNA-seq to investigate the transcriptomic response to weaning at housing in bovine leukocytes. The results showed that weaning stress alters the leukocyte transcriptome, with four main pathways (cytokine signaling, transmembrane transport, haemostasis, and G-protein-coupled receptor signaling) differentially regulated between control and weaned calves. Chemokines, cytokines, and integrins were consistently up-regulated following weaning. The study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological response to weaning stress, indicating long-term effects of stress exposure in the bovine.
