Summary

Detlef Biemelt and Horst H. Gerke analyzed field-measured data from the artificially constructed "Chicken Creek" hydrological catchment in Germany to obtain hysteretic water retention functions for characterizing initial soil pore structure development phases. The study used tensiometers and TDR-probes installed at different soil depths to evaluate soil water contents and pressure heads, revealing clear differences in water retention during wetting and drying periods and strong hysteretic behavior. The results improve understanding of soil hydraulic properties during initial development phases and help parameterize soil hydraulic functions for quantitative analysis.
