Summary

Microbial life in soil is exposed to fluctuating environmental conditions, and spatial aspects play a major role in recovering from stress events. Simulations with varying stress intensities and parameters showed that key factors for functional recovery depend on the location of observed habitats, with spatial processes and growth being limiting factors. Recovery also depends on stress intensity, with spatial configuration having no influence after low-stress events. Including a dispersal network representing a fungal network increased spatial performance, but only in scenarios where spatial distribution of the stressed area played a role. Spatial aspects are crucial for recovering after severe stress events in heterogeneous environments like soil.
