Certification is not compulsory, but manufacturers must declare conformity to UBA evaluation criteria, with optional certification by an accredited body. European certificates like WRAS or ACS are not equivalent to German certificates. Products with invalid or expired test certificates cannot be used in new installations or maintenance of water supply systems, but the sale of such products is not regulated. Existing installations are not subject to the new evaluation criteria, but owners or operators may be liable if inferior water quality causes health issues.
