Summary

Michael (Mike) A. McNeilly started his career at Union Carbide's Silicones Division, where he worked on validating the quality of trichlorosilane. He then founded Apogee Chemical to supply ultra-high purity chemicals to the semiconductor industry. After a falling out with his partner, McNeilly started Applied Materials with a $7,000 loan, focusing on equipment and silane (SiH4) manufacture for lower temperature deposition of CVD films. He became involved with Fairchild, getting to know Gordon Moore, Bob Noyce, and other key figures, and recognized the industry's need for chemistry expertise and hazardous chemical handling. Applied Materials dominated the market, responding quickly to new film technologies like silicon dioxide and silicon nitride. McNeilly recalled breakthroughs during the Apogee period, including becoming the first West Coast supplier of silicon precursors, and demonstrated the ability to produce and handle silane at Applied Materials.
