Summary

The electronic structure of Ti2AlN and TiN thin films is investigated using soft x-ray emission spectroscopy and ab initio density-functional theory. Three bond regions are identified: Ti 3d - Al 3p, Ti 3d - N 2p, and Ti 3d - N 2s, with varying energies. The results show a modified spectral shape of Al L2,3 emission in Ti2AlN due to Ti 3d - Al 3p hybridization. The differences in electronic and crystal structures between Ti2AlN and TiN are discussed in relation to the intercalated Al layers and changes in material properties.
