Summary

The first photographs, seen in 1839, were in black and white, and the search for a practical colour photography process began. Scientists and experimenters worked on the problem, and in 1861, James Clerk Maxwell proved that all colours can be reproduced by mixing red, green, and blue light. The Autochrome process, invented by Auguste and Louis Lumière in France in 1904, used transparent starch grains dyed red, green, and blue-violet to create a colour image. The process involved a complex industrial manufacturing process, but was relatively simple to use, and did not require special apparatus. Autochrome plates were first commercially available in 1907, and were popular among photographers, despite being more expensive than monochrome plates. The plates produced a unique, luminous, and dream-like quality, reminiscent of pointillist or impressionist painting. By 1913, the Lumière factory was producing 6,000 Autochrome plates a day, and they remained popular until eventually replaced by newer colour photography technologies.
